SCAM ALERTS

Sadly, Dear Sky Customers Congratulations are not in order, a lot of people are receiving either a pop-up or a text message claiming to be from Sky and offering the lucky respondents to a market survey a great prize.

There is no great prize, in fact you lose control of your personal data as this is yet another phishing attempt by fraudsters. Phishing, (online identity theft),  is still growing APWG research show that the number of unique phishing sites rose 46% in 2018.

IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT’S A SCAM!

We are experiencing an increasing number of reports of telephone calls from 0333 and 02895 numbers claiming to be from the Amazon Review Team. The caller then asks for your mobile number to send a verification code. The code then arrives with a link to log-in. Unsurprisingly the link is not to the real Amazon website and the whole scam is just to get your log-in details and access to your account.

The fraudsters can then order whatever they like at your expense as well as playing havoc with your personal details. According to Norton 1 in 3 UK adults were victims of cyber-crime last year.

AMAZON WILL NEVER ASK YOU FOR YOUR MOBILE NUMBER, IF SOMEONE DOES END THE CALL!

When you sell something through eBay, Gumtree, Depop or even Bump it’s essential that you choose a safe way to receive the funds. However, fraudsters have created another scam to make people think that the funds are safe, so they send the goods, but they are not and the goods disappear. This week we helped someone about to send £200 trainers to a fraudster that hadn’t paid.

The scam works by the fraudster suggesting using PayPal goods and services service, this is a great service to protect buyers and sellers, however the fraudsters send a fake email to the seller telling them that funds have been received when none have been sent. In this case the seller would have lost the £200 trainers. The email as you can see below is very convincing but means nothing. The PayPal goods and services service is great but read on to use it safely. According to Experian ecommerce fraud grew by 30% last year.

CHECK YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT TO SEE IF A PAYMENT HAS BEEN RECEIVED IF NOT CALL PAYPAL TO VERIFY
